Global Pension Research and Commentary – A Year in Review

January 2026

Since launching in Q4 2024, Haines Global Pensions has published a series of articles and newsletters analysing pension systems, retirement age reform, disability provision and workforce participation across multiple jurisdictions.

This work has appeared on our website, through the Global Pensions Viewpoints LinkedIn newsletter, and in leading industry publications.

Published in The Actuary and Industry Press

In September 2025, Global Warning: Solving Pensions Gaps Around the World was published in The Actuary. The article examined structural pension coverage gaps, including informal work, incomplete contribution records and gender inequality.

Our research on disability and workforce participation has also been referenced in European Pensions, and we were quoted in Pensions Age on lessons from European systems in addressing economic inactivity.

These contributions reflect the relevance of comparative pension analysis to current UK and international policy debates.

Rising Retirement Ages

A consistent theme has been the steady increase in State Pension Ages across many countries.

We have analysed:

  • Global trends in national retirement ages
  • The policy case for later retirement
  • Fairness considerations

We have also submitted evidence to the UK State Pension Age Review

Retirement age reform is not an isolated issue. It sits at the intersection of demography, labour markets and fiscal sustainability.

Disability, Ill-Health and Participation

A second major strand has focused on disability and ill-health pensions.

Our work has included:

  • Comparative commentary on disability and ill-health provision across European systems
  • Analysis of the link between disability benefits, workforce participation and early retirement
  • Examination of the cost of long-term sickness for employers and pension outcomes
  • Engagement with the UK’s Keep Britain Working agenda and related workforce health discussions

In many countries, disability design is central to understanding economic inactivity and long-term pension outcomes.

Regional Developments

We have also examined system design and reform in specific jurisdictions, including:

  • Central Europe – Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia
  • Compulsory contribution reforms in the Czech Republic
  • Dutch reform under the Future Pensions Act
  • Later working patterns in Sweden
  • Pension provision across parts of Africa
  • Structural challenges in Indonesia

The aim has been straightforward – to set out how systems operate, how they are changing and what that means in practice.

UK Legislative and Policy Developments

Alongside international work, we have written on:

  • The Pension Schemes Bill 2025
  • Potential changes to salary sacrifice
  • Institutional investment themes in Scotland
  • The Keep Britain Working Review

Taken together, these articles and newsletters represent a growing body of international pension analysis grounded in practical experience and cross-border comparison.

All publications are available via the Global Pension News section of our website and through Global Pensions Viewpoints on LinkedIn.
